Notebook Ergonomics 101

No matter you are an accidental laptop user or operate with it all your time, you are always exposing yourself to a long subjection to pains and aches.

“Notebook style is most importantly worked out to implement all needed features in a one mobile system; the ergonomics can’t be perfect; it is not perfect”, stated Dave Miller, ergonomics specialist at United States Ergonomics. Actually, notebooks are not correspondent to the most significant ergonomic demand for personal computers: the display and the keyboard should stand at different heights. “Dependent on pose you take, there is a constant danger of hurting either shoulder, or neck, or the wrists”, claimed Miller. Speaking frankly, it’s unreal to install your notebook for allowing maximal convenience in case of both viewing and typing; there is always a need to immolate one aspect.

Thus, is there a real necessity to give up applying notebooks at all? Fortunately, the answer is negative. “Using additional equipment", Miller states, “a person can make the laptop a part of completely ergonomic workplace, with additional convenience of portability”. One of the most efficient ways to provide no pain or aches with mobile computers is to purchase an extra, full-fledged keyboard to provide yourself with features, equal to desktop PCs. A separate keyboard also provides you with opportunity to work from a distance convenient for your vision, without making your eyes look at the display closely (perfect viewing distance is approximately of arm length). One more good solution is to purchase a heightened notebook stand that will make the display higher than eyes level. Glancing at a laptop display when it is located on the desk or flat table forces you bow your neck or tilt your head downwards in direction to the display, making you back and neck hurt.

If there is not enough place (or force) to carry an extra keyboard when you are on the road, you may try a portable mouse to protect your wrists and hands from aches. There is also one more option to purchase a light cooling pad for securing your laps when there is no appropriate table or desk. No matter what conditions are available for the most of computer operations, you should have awareness about the laptops on-board palm and wrist rests. The wrists are necessary to remain in a flat, or their neutral pose when you type, and when the wrists are resting, they are on different levels with your hands. Thus, apply wrist rest to help your hands stay free, but only in case of their free, non-working position. When the ability to ergonomically implement a notebook is present, there is one more thing to learn: how to carry it. If a notebook and its accessories (as well as external mouse, power supply and additional battery) are over ten pounds in weight totally, we recommend that you should purchase a rucksack.
